INTERCULTURAL STUDIES: Harmonious Education in Culture-Based Elementary Schools

On Thursday, October 24, 2019, Bachelor of Education for Islamic Elementary School Teacher Program State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga held an international discussion with the topic "Intercultural Studies: Harmonious Education in Culture-Based Elementary Schools". This discussion was held in the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education building's theatrical room on the first floor. The speaker of this event is Janna Hoza, an elementary school teacher from Colorado, the United States, which several colleagues from Australia attended. Student representatives moderated this activity, and Dr Muqowim, S.Ag., M.Ag as Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education's deputy dean III and Head of Study Program Mrs Dr Aninditya Sri Nugraheni, S.Pd., M.Pd opened the event. Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University Bachelor and Magister of Education for Islamic Elementary School Teacher Program students participated in this activity.

Janna made multiple points throughout her presentation, the first concerning the learning method used in the United States, particularly in Colorado. According to him, the goal of primary school learning is to direct children to be critical and active. Teachers encourage and make students feel like friends who actively participate in conversations so that the connection between students and teachers is always harmonious. Furthermore, according to Janna, religious issues are not permitted in public classrooms in the United States. Religious instruction is only accessible in special schools. Even yet, there is no restriction on religious worship.

Second, she talked about culture and how it relates to primary education. She says education in the United States, as in Indonesia, is open to culture and tradition. Dance, art festivals, and other activities are available. However, it was not prioritized, and just a small part was added. Following the presentation of the material, the activity continued with a question-and-answer session. Some students responded in the form of questions. And the conversation was cooperative. Overall, students are particularly keen to learn about the educational system and culture of industrialized nations such as the United States. Of course, events like these must be carried out constantly to deepen students' knowledge, particularly in Education for Islamic Elementary School Teacher Program.
